When Seba returns, Larten introduces him to Wester, who also decides to become Seba's assistant. Murlough flees the city in order to avoid another run in with Wester. In encountering Murlough, Wester is knocked unconscious, but Larten refuses to allow Murlough to devour Wester, earning the Vampaneze's respect. When Wester seeks to confront his family's killer, Larten elects to go with him. Larten meets Wester Flack, whose parents and siblings had been murdered by a Vampaneze.
Seba leaves Larten with Hibernius Tall at the Cirque du Freak while he attends Council. Larten meets Paris - who asks that Seba become a Vampire Prince in preparation for Council though Seba refuses. Seba offers Larten the opportunity to become his assistant, which Larten accepts. Here, Larten meets Seba - who introduces himself to Larten as a Vampire and details the lifestyle.
Larten avenges his cousin's death and flees, taking refuge in a cemetery and consuming spiderwebs in order to satisfy his growing hunger. Larten's cousin, Vur Hortston - who had been claimed by Larten's mother upon his parent's death - is drowned by his foreman, Traz during an intentional provocation. Seba breaks his leg en route to Council and is forced to hold up in a cave to heal for its duration. Larten Crepsley is born into a large family. Turning his back on the Vampaneze, Vancha changes his last name from Harst to "March". Vancha encounters Paris, who risks his life in order to blood Vancha as a Vampire after hearing Vancha's story. Though Gannen found a place for himself among the Vampaneze, Vancha did not - as he despised having to kill when he fed. When Vancha and Gannen come of age, Evanna brings them to the Vampaneze in order to join their ranks. When their parents are killed, the two are found by Evanna, who rears them as if they were her own. Vancha Harst is born alongside his brother, Gannen Harst.
The Cirque du Freak is founded by Hibernius Tall and begins touring. Tiny helps to build a palace of ice within which the Vampires would die peacefully. When a peace treaty is struck, Perta and several other Vampires are unable to accept the existence of the Vampaneze and instead exile themselves in Greenland, where Mr. Seba fought in the war alongside Perta, killing his former master in retribution for turning his back on the Clan. Though many had been in favor of being true to what the Vampires initially stood for rather than changing, the divide sparked a war with the Vampaneze that greatly reduced the number of Vampires in existence. Though Perta managed to escape, he was hounded by Evanna for six months before the Princes begged her for mercy on Perta's behalf.Īs the Clan begins to become more progressive - seventy Vampires separate from the Clan in order to create the Vampaneze. Perta Vin-Grahl leads five other Vampires to their deaths in attempting an attack on Evanna. Tiny ventures to Vampire Mountain, telling the Clan of a prophecy in which a figure known as the Vampaneze Lord would rise to lead the Vampaneze in eradicating Vampires once and for all. Seba Nile is born and is blooded as a child. Paris Skyle is born and is blooded as a child. Within a year, the two grow into adult forms and take their places within destiny.
